Old-time bakery
a sweet addition
to Lake Park

Hankering for an old-time bakery, with pies, cakes and cookies? Go see Lorene Hughey at Lorene's Loving Oven in Lake Park.
"We do it all - coconut cookies, pound cakes, at least a dozen varieties - red velvet cakes, coconut cream pies, peach cobblers," Hughey said. "We do egg custard pies, sweet potato pies, pineapple upside-down cake and the best lemon bars anywhere."
Everything is made from scratch, and usually from traditional recipes, she said. "I make an oatmeal cookie with real oatmeal and whole raisins. I want to see what I'm eating, and my customers just love them. I've got several kinds of cookies, but the oat meals are the ones people come back for; those and the real lemon bars. Mine aren't that really sweet kind; I use real lemons to make mine."
For years, Hughey worked at the Palm Beach and Oakbrook Square Publix bakeries, often training others to make the beautiful wedding cakes that she now carries in her own bakery.
"I retired from Publix, but couldn't just sit around, and baking is a long-time family business," she said. Her mother, Altamese Kerr, helps her, and does the "old fashioned items" like German chocolate cake and the pound cakes. " I do the fancy gourmet desserts for parties, the chocolate mousse and strawberries and hazelnut-chocolate tarts," Hughey said.
A selection of individual deserts and cookies are available daily; whole cakes or specialty deserts can be ordered with as little as 24 hours notice, though wedding cakes must be planned well in advance.
The bakery is at 905 U.S. 1, Lake Park. it's open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; phone 881-9006.
